Care Guide

Original paintings

  • Light: Hang away from direct sunlight. UV rays fade pigments over time, even in oils. Indirect natural light or warm artificial light is ideal.
  • Humidity: Avoid hanging above fireplaces, radiators, or air conditioning vents. Canvas and wood supports expand and contract with humidity, so a stable, moderate environment goes a long way toward protecting the work.
  • Cleaning: Never use water, solvents, or cleaning products on the painted surface. To remove dust, use a very soft, clean brush with gentle strokes. When in doubt, consult a conservator.
  • Handling: Always hold canvases by the sides of the stretcher, never by the face or the top edge. Oil paintings especially should not be touched on the painted surface, because skin oils can degrade paint films.
  • Storage: If storing, keep upright in a cool, dry location. Interleave with acid-free tissue if storing multiple works face-to-face.

Giclée prints

  • Framing: Frame under UV-protective glass or acrylic to prevent fading. Use acid-free mat board and backing, because standard cardboard is acidic and will yellow the paper over time.
  • Light: Like originals, keep out of direct sunlight. Archival inks on matte paper are rated for 100+ years under museum conditions.
  • Handling: Handle prints by the edges only. Fingerprints on the print surface are very difficult to remove from matte paper without damage.
  • Storage: Store flat in a clean, dry portfolio or interleave with acid-free glassine. Do not roll matte prints.
